Deaf President Now Movie

An exciting new documentary titled “Deaf President Now!” is coming to Apple TV+, co-directed by Deaf advocate Nyle DiMarco and Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim. This powerful film tells the story of a pivotal moment in Deaf history and civil rights.

The documentary focuses on the historic eight days of protests at Gallaudet University in 1988. When the board of trustees appointed a hearing president despite having qualified Deaf candidates, students took a stand. Their powerful protest led to a historic victory: Dr. I. King Jordan becoming Gallaudet’s first Deaf president.

Through intimate interviews with the “Gallaudet four” – Jerry Covell, Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, Tim Rarus, and Greg Hlibok – along with Dr. I. King Jordan himself, the film brings this watershed moment to life. The documentary introduces an innovative filming technique called “Deaf Point of View,” which combines unique visual storytelling with carefully crafted sound design to help viewers experience the world through Deaf perspectives.

The production itself broke new ground for inclusion in filmmaking, with dozens of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals working both in front of and behind the camera. Wayne Betts Jr., a Deaf Lens producer, helped create the film’s distinctive visual style, which DiMarco calls “Visual Noise.”

With a score by renowned composer Marco Beltrami, the documentary promises to be both artistically innovative and historically significant. Set for release in early 2025, it will be available in select theaters and on Apple TV+.

The Deaf President Now movement had far-reaching effects beyond Gallaudet’s campus, helping spark momentum for the Americans with Disabilities Act. This documentary preserves this crucial chapter in civil rights history while celebrating Deaf culture and community. It continues Apple’s commitment to Deaf representation, following their acclaimed film “CODA.”

Through powerful storytelling and groundbreaking filmmaking techniques, “Deaf President Now!” promises to bring this inspiring story of activism and change to audiences worldwide.Β
